Poor scarecrow. Some angry yellowjackets decided to make a nest in his shirt. Lucky for him, Big Dan the Bugman came to his rescue. He needed a wardrobe update anyway.

The best part of the video is the last second when the yellowjackets start to fight back.

It’s Getting Colder…

The seasons are changing and while we bundle up to stay warm, pests are looking for a way to enter your home to stay warm too. Now is a good time to look around the outside of your home for any small opening that a mouse or other small animal could enter through. You would be amazed at how small of a space they can squeeze into! If you do find an opening, before you seal it shut, look for chewed edges or mouse droppings. The last thing you want to do is seal a mouse (or mice) into your wall where they will either find another way out or die and start to decompose. It’s not a pleasant experience to have a hole cut in your wall to remove a smelly dead mouse.

Subterranean Termites

Dan and Duane recently joined forces to inspect a home with Subterranean Termites. The termites had actually eaten through a wall and were eating away at a picture frame.

Here’s 10 things you may or may not know about Subterranean Termites:

1. They are the most common wood-destroying organism in the United States.

2. They cause more than $2 billion in damage each year.

3. They need moisture to survive.

4. Subterranean Termites are social insects that live in colonies that may contain hundreds of thousands of individuals.

5. They eat anything containing cellulose but will tunnel and damage a variety of materials in search of food.

6. Their underground tunnels can reach hundreds of feet in length.

7. “Worker” Subterranean Termites are actually blind.

8. Ants are the natural enemy of termites.

9. Subterranean Termites move soil and water above ground to make mud tubes that allow them to tunnel across exposed areas without the drying effects of air.

10. The best way to prevent Subterranean Termites is to stop their ability to locate food, moisture and shelter.

Bald Faced Hornet

It’s the end of summer and that means it’s hornet, wasp and bee season. We have been receiving a lot of call recently from people with hornets flying in and out of their exterior walls. Many people will try to solve the problem themselves by waiting until evening when all the hornets have returned to the nest, then sealing the hole they are entering from. The problem with this solution is the hornets are still alive and sealing their point of entry only activates their survival instincts. The hornets will either find another way out, often through a vent in the house, or will actually chew through drywall and make a new hole. So now you not only have hornets outside your home and in your walls, you also have them in your house.

The safest and quickest way to deal with hornets, wasps and bees (or any pest) is to hire a professional. Hello everyone! This is Kimberly from the office of Prevent Pest Control in Elyria, Ohio serving Lorain County and Cleveland, Ohio. This blog is going to be your favorite spot to learn all about pest control issues in our area. We will be sharing videos and pictures from our technicians out in the field along with tips and advice on how to keep pests from ruining your day. We’ll even throw in a special discount every now and then for you.

Let me introduce our bloggers to you:

Dan Stintsman – Dan has been in the pest control business for 15 years. He enjoys playing competitive volleyball and attending Church of the Open Door in Elyria with his wife Carrie and their three children; Danny, Cailey and Maddie. As owner, his favorite part of pest control is meeting new people and solving their problems. Being able to help people every day is a blessing for Dan.

Derrick Roberts – Derrick has been a technician for Prevent Pest Control for almost two years. He likes the beach and all things sports but is especially interested in baseball. Try asking him trivia questions about Cleveland Sports when he services your home or business. His favorite part of pest control is learning the habits of a variety of pests so he can clearly explain to others why they have the problem they’re having and how to prevent it in the future.

Kimberly Vargas – Kimberly started in the office of Prevent Pest Control in July of 2010. She loves the outdoors and photography. A California native, she moved to Ohio about three years ago to experience the four seasons. Her favorite part of pest control is making clients feel well taken care of.
